Rear Housings & Back Glass — buyer notes (Pixel 7 Pro to Pixel 2)

A rear housing job is not one repair — it is a choice between swapping the whole assembly and separating the glass from the mid-frame. The iPhone 8 to 13 rear panel is bonded, not clipped — cold removal cracks the sheet and can bend the frame. For Pixel 7 Pro you can take either the complete housing or just the glass, depending on whether the frame is being reused. Pixel 7 Pro is bonded glass-on-frame, which is what makes the full-housing route attractive on that model.

On the more serviceable later generations, the same fault can often be fixed with far less bench time, which changes what is worth stocking.

Specs and checks that matter

• Repair routes: Full housing swap, or laser-separating the rear glass and bonding a new one
• Design change: From iPhone 14 onward the rear is more serviceable (14 Pro and Pro Max still use the bonded structure)
• Bonding: On iPhone 8 through 13 the rear glass is adhered to the mid-frame, so glass-only work needs laser separation
• Frame adhesive: The frame adhesive is the part that decides whether the rear stays sealed — it is supplied with the housing

How is the rear glass removed on an older iPhone?

On the 8 through 13 series the glass is bonded to the frame, so a laser separator breaks the adhesive layer before the sheet is lifted — heat alone will not do it.

Is the adhesive pre-applied?

Frame adhesive is supplied, and it is the part that determines whether the rear stays sealed.

Full housing or glass only?

Both routes are supplied — full housing for a complete swap, glass only where the frame is being reused.

Will the housing fit without trimming?

Frame tolerances are checked against the original so the housing seats without sanding or shimming.
