Rear Housings & Back Glass — buyer notes (iPhone 7 Plus to iPhone 7)

From the iPhone 8 through the iPhone 13, the rear glass is bonded to the chassis with a full-frame adhesive and cannot be peeled off cold. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max kept the older bonded construction, so they behave like the 13-series in the bay. iPhone 7 Plus housings and iPhone 7 Plus glass-only both sit in the range, so the repair route is your choice. On iPhone 7 Plus the glass is adhered to the frame, so a full housing swap is frequently quicker than separating the glass.

Laser separation has become standard on the bonded generations, which means the tooling and skill requirement is as important as the part itself.

Specs and checks that matter

  • Design change: From iPhone 14 onward the rear is more serviceable (14 Pro and Pro Max still use the bonded structure)
  • Repair routes: Full housing swap, or laser-separating the rear glass and bonding a new one
  • Bonding: On iPhone 8 through 13 the rear glass is adhered to the mid-frame, so glass-only work needs laser separation

Can I heat the rear glass off an iPhone 12?

No — the 8 to 13 series is bonded across the whole panel, so a laser separator is the standard route. Heat alone tends to crack the sheet.

Does the finish match the original?
